Life can feel like a series of battles as we face challenges that make us feel like we’re no longer in control.   The battles may be quick, long lasting or recurring.  I believe what’s important during the course of the battles are to be able to assess and identify battle plans along with limitations of our control, execute effective strategies, and implement tools, skills and support to fortify our personal mental arsenal.  In doing so, it helps us to be prepared to endure whatever life may throw our way.  Does that mean it’s easy? Absolutely not, but I believe going through life without plans, tools and support is much more difficult.  No matter what stage of the battle you are in, I welcome you to come as you are. I believe that no ones size therapy fits all, and use an eclectic approach to counseling that tailors an approach and techniques to the individual that I am in the room (or virtual room) with.  Topics I’ve worked with include but are not limited to anxiety, depression, mood disorders (including bipolar disorders), addictions, substance abuse, serious mental illness, low self-esteem, suicidality, personality disorders, ineffective communication, behavioral concerns, and transitions of home/employment.

We all have wounds and scars that need to be addressed, processed and healed.  Though the healing process can be challenging or uncomfortable at times, I believe the best investment we can make is in ourselves.  It would be an honor and privilege to watch you evolve as you take the steps in healing the battle scars and wounds you carry.

Marie Shelton, MS, LCMHC

-Currently accepting new clients in Nags Head. –

I received my Master of Science in Community Counseling from the University of South Alabama. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina (15824). As a counselor, I am dedicated to my clients’ journey towards increased wellness, as well as helping them through challenging times. Currently, I use EMDR with older adolescents and adults (ages 16 and up).

Although I draw from many different counseling theories and techniques, over the last couple of years I have started working towards specializing my therapeutic approach with EMDR. I have engaged in extensive training to provide EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) therapy. Currently, I use EMDR with older adolescents and adults (ages 16 and up). EMDR is an effective therapeutic approach to help people heal symptoms stemming from traumatic memories. While other therapeutic methods are effective as well, EMDR usually reprocesses trauma more quickly providing symptom relief sooner.

MY LICENSES

Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor
(LCMHC 15824, North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors)

I believe that counseling is a process which supports a person’s desire for wellness and change in his/her life. At this time I work with adolescents as well as adults (ages 16 and up). I tend to combine different approaches and techniques in counseling, including EMDR, client centered therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness training, meditation, gestalt therapy, anger management, rational emotive therapy, bibliotherapy, and psycho-education. I am comfortable working with individuals who are struggling with trauma, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, anger, shame, addiction, grief, dual-diagnosis, and codependency.
I utilize a lot of psychoeducation to help my clients acknowledge where they can use change, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to help the client implement change as well as reminding every client of mine they are fabulous, amazing, and can do anything they put their mind to.

I believe that people can change, and that change can be facilitated with counseling. In order to create change a client must be motivated and committed to the process and we work together to create therapeutic goals. A trusting relationship between the client and the counselor is crucial in order for therapy to be effective. I will do my best to ensure that an environment is created that supports such a relationship. I believe that practicing mindfulness in order to expand self-awareness and develop insight is an important part of initiating the process of change. Learning to treat yourself with self-compassion and kindness is an essential step as well. I consider my approach to counseling to be eclectic. Although at this time my primary focus is EMDR therapy, as appropriate, I will adapt my theoretical framework, techniques and approach based on the situation, personality and needs of my client. Drawing from several different therapeutic techniques I approach every client’s individuality and situation with sensitivity and flexibility.
